iphone 16 and 16 pro

The iPhone 16 series comes with several interesting updates, but it’s clear that Apple is playing its usual game of staggered upgrades between the regular and Pro models. Here’s a breakdown of the key points, categorized into the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The Good:

  1. Durability Enhancements: Apple has upgraded the ceramic shield on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, claiming it’s 50% stronger than the first-gen shield. Even though the exact methodology behind this improvement is unclear, durability upgrades are always a win.

  2. Spatial Video & Camera Improvements: The camera arrangement is back to a linear design, reminiscent of older iPhones, allowing the main and ultra-wide cameras to work together for spatial video. This is a handy feature, especially for those using the Apple Vision Pro. Autofocus on the ultra-wide camera in non-Pro models is also a welcome addition.

  3. AI & Apple Intelligence: Both the regular and Pro models are designed with AI at their core. Apple's machine learning capabilities, powered by the A18 chip, bring faster CPU and graphics performance while being more power efficient. Apple Intelligence shows promise in features like email summaries, notification reduction, and photo cleanup, though some of it may feel like playing catch-up to competitors.

  4. Gaming Performance: The non-Pro models now feature two generations of chip upgrades (A16 to A18), leading to a significant performance boost. Gaming on these phones should be a much smoother experience thanks to better heat dissipation and performance sustainability.

  5. Pro Camera Upgrades: For the Pro models, the main camera has zero shutter lag and can shoot 4K at 120 frames per second, bringing slow-motion capabilities at high resolution. The five times optical zoom, previously exclusive to the Pro Max, is now on the smaller Pro models as well.

  6. Siri Upgrade: The long-overdue upgrade to Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence, promises fewer frustrating "Here’s what I found on the web" responses. This brings Siri closer to being an actual helpful assistant by better understanding context in conversations.

The Bad:

  1. Minor Design Iterations: The regular iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are essentially identical to last year's models in terms of design, with minor changes like the new ultramarine color. It feels like Apple is playing it safe with design, perhaps too safe.

  2. Action Button Awkwardness: While the action button is now included in the base models, its positioning makes it difficult to use for many people. It’s a cool feature in theory, but its practical utility can be limited due to the ergonomics.

  3. Overlapping Features: Apple’s decision to add a camera control button alongside the action button creates some overlap in functionality. Both buttons can control the camera, but the new camera control button does it better, leaving the action button feeling redundant.

  4. AI Features Not Revolutionary: The AI features that Apple is pushing—like email summaries and distraction removal from photos—are certainly useful, but they aren’t revolutionary. Many competitors have offered similar tools for a while. The base iPhone models’ AI capabilities don’t quite live up to the hype Apple is creating around "Apple Intelligence."

The Ugly:

  1. 60Hz Display: Both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus still have a 60Hz refresh rate, making the display feel sluggish compared to competitors in the same price range, many of whom offer smoother 90Hz or 120Hz displays. This feels like a significant drawback in an era where fluid scrolling and faster responsiveness are expected.

  2. Delayed AI Features: Many of the flagship AI features, including improved Siri functionality and other Apple Intelligence tools, aren’t coming until later in the year. This delayed rollout takes away from the excitement of the launch and raises concerns about whether they’ll live up to the hype when they do arrive.

  3. Pro Storage Limitation: The smaller iPhone 16 Pro still starts with 128GB of storage. For a phone capable of recording 4K at 120fps, this is simply not enough, especially considering how much storage high-resolution videos and photos require.

Overall, the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro series bring several incremental improvements, especially in terms of AI and machine learning capabilities, but Apple hasn’t radically changed the game. There’s a strong sense that Apple is holding back some of its more exciting innovations for future Pro models or other devices, while the base models get a bit of last year's Pro hand-me-downs.
